Message from the President

Bill Danola

This year golf returned to the Olympic Games after more than a century hiatus. The final round in the men’s category produced great drama between Rose and Stenson with the outcome on the line to the last hole. Matt Kuchar posted an amazing score of 63 to take the bronze for Team U.S.A. and Stacy Lewis barely missed a putt on the final hole to just miss out by one stroke. Let’s hope that golf becomes a permanent addition. The Games once again entertained with athletic achievements and outstanding sportsmanship. However, there were also the instances of poor sportsmanship such as refusing to shake hands with an opponent and complaining about an opposing team’s strategy after a defeat. There was alleged state sponsored cheating that disqualified a large number of athletes and there were off field activities that left us all befuddled. Still, the Games were a great success.

Golf at Rancho Santa Fe may lack the drama and world stage of the Olympics, however, it still means a great deal to us. We too are passionate about the game while enjoying the play and the comradery. The linchpin in amateur play, especially in our tournaments, is the handicap system. This is the reason it is common practice for private golf clubs to monitor postings. You recently received an email from the Rules and Handicap Committee about posting scores. Most members are very diligent about posting scores, however, many rounds have not been posted into the handicap system. I am sure most of this is just oversight. The better we get at this the more we will enhance the appeal of our tournaments.

As you may be aware, we have been without an executive chef for a few weeks. Sous Chef Juan has done a great job taking on added responsibilities in the meantime. We recently concluded our interview process for a new chef and have extended an offer to a very enthusiastic young chef, Joey Rojas. Joey is scheduled to start September 19. We are excited about Joey joining our team and are confident that he will elevate our food service dramatically. Please come to the restaurant and welcome our new chef and enjoy the food.

The Board of Governors (the Board) has been looking for ways to better communicate with you. Some of you may not be aware that every Board meeting begins with member input. Please come and tell us what you would like to see at your club. Also, next month we will launch our interactive Divot. At the end of each column in the Divot you will be able to send a comment directly to the author’s email. Please take advantage of this feature. This is your club. The Board looks forward to your input so it can better serve your interest.

Vaya Con Dios
